Laureate Professor Roger Smith is a man of many talents and interests. As the Co-Director of the University of Newcastle’s Priority Research Centre for Reproductive Science, and the Director of the University’s Mothers and Babies Research Centre and the Department of Endocrinology at John Hunter Hospital, he’s also a man with many responsibilities. All 2,493 items targeted by China’s tariffs in US trade war — Quartz

China’s latest tariff retaliation, announced today, will hit some $60 billion in US exports, including hundreds of agricultural, mining, and manufactured products, threatening jobs and profits at companies around the United States.  Before the trade war starts in earnest, China bought about 17% of US agricultural exports and was a major market for other goods, from Maine lobster to Boeing aircraft. It has been the largest market for Apple iPhones since 2016. Since the escalation of tariffs, though, China has stopped buying soybeans and lobsters, and Apple warned it would miss its expected Christmas holiday sales figures because of trade tensions. In addition to the 25% tariffs below, Beijing also added 20% tariffs on 1,078 US products, 10% tariffs on 974 US products, and 5% tariffs on 595 US products (all links in Chinese). The list was translated from China’s ministry of finance press release using Google translate, and may be inexact in spots. Quartz also rearranged some items on the list to group them into categories, and they may not be in the order of their “harmonized tariff schedule” codes.  Injection Moulding, Plastic Molding, Rapid Prototyping – Hitop Industrial,...

People have been predicting it for years, we foreshadowed it a few months ago, and on

People have been predicting it for years, we foreshadowed it a few months ago, and on Thursday it finally happened: one can now waltz into a dealership and spoil the better part of a hundred grand on a pickup truck. See that 2018 Silverado 3500 Crew Cab Dually up top, though? It doesn’t cost $100,000. It doesn’t even cost $50,000. It is, in fact, only $340 more expensive than a top-rung Honda Ridgeline. This whole sordid exercise was brought on by — as most sordid exercises are — a Craigslist ad. In it, I found a 2003 Chevy Silverado 3500 Crew Cab Dually with the *ahem * 8.1-liter V8 and manual transmission. Have mercy. While the mighty Vortec 8100 is no longer installed behind HD bowties, its 330 horsepower is eclipsed by the 360 hp found in today’s 6.0-liter gas engine offered by The General in its HD pickups. The big-block made more torque, naturally. What caught my eye in the Craigslist ad was the inclusion of a factory window sticker for the 2003 brute (go here if the ad disappears). All that power, all those tires, all that capability was available on the dealer lot for a grand total of $34,156 including destination. This information caused me to jump out of my...

The best Wi-Fi 6 routers to buy for your smart home today

A new age of speedy wireless internet connectivity is upon us, thanks to not only the possibly over-hyped 5G (mass rollout of which is not really due until next year) but the next generation Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ax, aka Wi-Fi 6. Put simply, Wi-Fi 6 makes possible speeds of up to and possibly exceeding 1Gbps, three times faster than current Wi-Fi 5 (aka 802.11ac). Even if you don’t subscribe to 1Gbps-plus service from your internet provider, all your data will travel faster and more efficiently from further away from your router, even if you maintain your current internet subscription level thanks to the increased efficiencies and capabilities of Wi-Fi 6 technology. Unlike 5G, you can buy Wi-Fi 6 products now. And even if you only have a Wi-Fi 6 router, a busy connected household with multiple users simultaneously streaming 4K content, surfing the web, using Skype or FaceTime, and playing games online on current Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) devices should see performance improvements. Wi-Fi 6 shrinks latency, that time between requesting your smart vacuum start — and it actually working.iStock Last year, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced simpler names for Wi-Fi enhancements, hoping to r...

The comradery between South Sounders is strong, and — we’re biased — but it’s part of what makes living, working, and playing in this area feel so special. That’s why it is such a pleasure to bring our annual Best of the South Sound list to you each spring. Thousands of you voted for your favorite people, places, and services, and the results are in! Thank you to Moss Adams in Tacoma for tallying the votes. Congrats to all of the winners! Here is the Best of the South Sound decided by you, our readers. In its 16th year, the Museum of Glass has become a centerpiece for glassmaking in the area. Each year, the museum welcomes more than 100,000 visitors and is the West Coast’s largest and most active museum glass studio. A variety of unique, hands-on workshops, and the opportunity to watch local and international artists at work, are part of what makes the museum special. Tacoma The Grand is more than a cozy nonprofit cinema. The theater also is dedicated to supporting local filmmakers, offers community events for all ages (and has invited dogs to more than one film). Tacoma  Little Creek is more than just a casino: It’s a hotel, resort, and spa, it’s home to a golf club, eight din...
