Lawsuit to keep weed white, get your cannabis card, and Querkle reviewed

Curio Wellness, a Baltimore County weed provider, quickly dropped a suit against Maryland’s Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) which argued that the Commission should not be able to solicit applications for more licenses without conducting an analysis of supply and demand. The MMCC opened up the process to allow more licenses as the result of last year’s last-minute bill intended to correct the lack of diversity in the original licensees. In a state where one third of the population is black, none of the original licenses were given to black-owned applicants. If Curio had gone forward with the lawsuit and won, they would’ve insured that Maryland’s cannabis industry remains white. Curio did not return requests for comment, but a spokesperson tried to explain the move to the Sun. “Curio was compelled to file this action to protect their business investments and rights and to enforce the promises made by the state of Maryland and the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission to induce private sector growers to invest and operate in this important public health program,” said David Nevins, a Curio spokesman. “Those promises include the state not expanding the number of cultivator license...

If the idea is already in the design phase, you may just be looking for a company that will manufacturer (fabricate or fab) your device. The choice of a fab involves different criteria including, of course, cost.  In addition to the wafer fabrication packaging is also a major consideration. A fab process that allows wafer level processing of both the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensor and the associated circuitry would be highly advantageous. Unlike processes that build MEMS devices before or beside the electronics on the same die, a process that grows MEMS devices above the IC without any having side effects on the electronics underneath has advantages.  This results in smaller die sizes, higher performance for many applications, as well as higher levels of integration. One company that achieves MEMS devices above the IC is MEMS VISION. Through the company’s MoSiC™ process that uses silicon carbide instead of silicon, they can deliver higher elastic modulus, higher acoustic velocity, higher temperature resistance, higher ultimate strength, inert surfaces and higher resistance to wear. With the close integration of MEMS and the IC, they can produce sensors with very hi...

Henry Kravis invests in crypto-oriented fund launched by former employee

KKR & Co co-founder Henry Kravis has invested in a crypto fund ParaFi Capital, Bloomberg writes. The company was set up by KKR & Co’s former employee Ben Forman last year, following his departure from KKR. Besides the investment from Kravis, ParaFi received funding from Bain Capital Ventures and Dragonfly Capital Partners. At KKR, Forman worked in the credit business and was the head of in-house research on blockchain and cryptocurrency. While he considered “pursuing blockchain investing within KKR,” but ultimately decided to “build the KKR of crypto” of his own.  “In the high-yield markets, I used to fight to outperform the index by tens of basis points,’’ Forman said. “Crypto, on the other hand, due to its nascency, offers a tremendous amount of alpha to active managers.’’  ParaFi manages $25 million, with plans to reach $100 million by the first quarter of 2020, Forman said. [NightHawkInLight] a.k.a. [Ben] recently built an awesome high power air cannon out of PVC pipe. PVC air cannons are great, and everyone should build one of these at some point in their life, but what really makes this build exceptional is the valve. [Ben] created a piston valve for this cannon that can be built with parts sourced from your local home supply store. Anyone can build this thing, and everyone should. Instead of using a ball valve or other such contrivance to dump air directly from a reservoir into the chamber of this PVC air cannon, [Ben] is using a much more clever design. This is a barrel sealing PVC air cannon, with a moving piston sealed against a rubber hose clamp in the barrel. Adding air through the fill valve moves the piston forward, allowing air to leak into the reservoir. The air supply is then disconnected, and the trigger released causing the piston to move backward. This releases all the air in the reservoir into the barrel instantaneously, resulting in faster ping pong balls and potatoes. The original trigger for this high power PVC air cannon used a simple ball valve for the trigger. [Ben] didn’t like this solution – it was hard to open and somewhat...

Man charged with punching Hard Rock slot machine | Siouxland Crime & Courts

Clear to partly cloudy. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible. Low 72F. Winds SSE at 10 to 20 mph. SIOUX CITY — A man faces a potential 15-year prison sentence for punching a slot machine at Sioux City’s Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and causing more than $1,000 in damage. Tommy Goldberg, 52, of Sioux City, was arrested on a warrant early Thursday and booked into the Woodbury County Jail on a charge of second-degree criminal mischief. He’s being held on a $15,000 bond. In a complaint filed Jan. 24 in Woodbury County District Court, Goldberg is accused of punching and shattering a slot machine touchscreen pad on Jan. 7. A slot attendant told police that Goldberg asked her for help getting a voucher ticket that was stuck. When she noticed that the screen was shattered, Goldberg told her it was broken when he got there. Goldberg was issued another voucher, and he immediately left the casino, court documents said. A security supervisor reviewed video surveillance and saw Goldberg playing the slot machine, which was not damaged at the time, and pressing a button on the touchscreen several times. He appeared to become frustrated and eventually punched the screen ...

All 2,493 items targeted by China’s tariffs in US trade war — Quartz

China’s latest tariff retaliation, announced today, will hit some $60 billion in US exports, including hundreds of agricultural, mining, and manufactured products, threatening jobs and profits at companies around the United States.  Before the trade war starts in earnest, China bought about 17% of US agricultural exports and was a major market for other goods, from Maine lobster to Boeing aircraft. It has been the largest market for Apple iPhones since 2016. Since the escalation of tariffs, though, China has stopped buying soybeans and lobsters, and Apple warned it would miss its expected Christmas holiday sales figures because of trade tensions. In addition to the 25% tariffs below, Beijing also added 20% tariffs on 1,078 US products, 10% tariffs on 974 US products, and 5% tariffs on 595 US products (all links in Chinese). The list was translated from China’s ministry of finance press release using Google translate, and may be inexact in spots. Quartz also rearranged some items on the list to group them into categories, and they may not be in the order of their “harmonized tariff schedule” codes.  Compost Turner, Fertilizer Crusher, Fertilizer Mixer, Fertilizer Dryer – E...

What began as Acadiana Good Times Rollers, turned into Acadiana Roller Girls in 2011, and finally became Acadiana Roller Derby in 2018. The ARD team plays flat track roller derby in accordance with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) — the international governing body for the sport. Ten skaters, five on each team, race around the track with one Jammer per team trying to score points while four Blockers try to thwart the opposing team’s Jammer. The Jammers start each race behind the pack and must race ahead and then lap the pack. They score a point for each opposing skater they lap in the race.  Acadiana Roller Derby’s May 4 bout had a S...

Arkansas’ brief rally in the number of active cotton gins has ended, as open gins declined

Arkansas’ brief rally in the number of active cotton gins has ended, as open gins declined from 33 to 28 between 2017 and 2018, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The state’s cotton acres rose from below 400,000 acres in 2015 to 485,000 in 2018, and so did the number of operating gins – 26 in 2015, 31 in 2016, and 33 in 2017. However, while acreage increased in 2018, the number of open gins did not. “The trend of gins increasing with cotton acreage stopped last year,” said Scott Stiles, Extension economist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “One reason is attributed to low cottonseed prices. With prices at decade lows, many ginners feared they couldn’t cover their operating costs. “Ginners frequently comment on smaller seed size in today’s cotton varieties, which reduces the quantity of seed per ginned bale,” he said. “Twenty-five years ago, it was common to net 800 pounds of seed per bale. Today, that number is closer to 600 pounds. This 25% decrease over the last 25 years has been a direct hit on a gin’s key revenue stream. “The cotton acres, however, continued to rise for the third straight year,” he said. “Now, some gins ar...
