Bring a Loupe: An Omega Ref. 2383-4 30T2, A Cutting-Edge Plastic Watch From Tissot, And A Universal Genève Waterproof Ref. 20218-1

Don’t go looking for a theme in this week’s roundup, as there is none to be found. I thought I’d give you a little bit of variety today, with a collection of pieces sure to satisfy a wide range of collecting tastes. At the more accessible end of the spectrum, there’s a 30T2-equipped Omega, along with a Zodiac powered by the venerable Valjoux 72. Slightly older than the rest are the Universal Genève Tri-Compax and Lemania CH27 chronograph, both of which ought to impress those that appreciate seldom-seen retailer signatures and impressive early chronographs alike. For the more avant-garde, there’s an innovative Tissot that paved the way for a more recent Swatch release, along with a Movado that still has its decidedly modern looking bracelet. Let’s jump right into it, shall we?  Everyone loves a good Tri-Compax, and I’m no different. The watch first came to market after its introduction at the Basel fair of 1944, commemorating 50 years of Universal Genève with a liberally complicated chronograph. Since then it has achieved legendary horological status, despite other manufacturers producing similarly complicated pieces. In other words, UG got it right with their various Tri-Compax ...

One pop… The holiday shopping season officially kicked off this past weekend with Black Friday, and consumers are scrambling to pick up the goods they want. One popular kind of gift this year will be a gift of experience, like tickets to a concert, play, or sporting event. Unfortunately, demand for tickets far outweighs supply most of the time, so it’s up to consumers to try and grab them as soon as they become available online. However, many buyers often walk away with nothing because the tickets seem to magically disappear within minutes or even seconds. While slow internet speeds or bad luck can play a factor, one reason for the lack of available tickets has been the existence of ticket bots —...

Through more than 40 intense and idiosyncratic roles — often in films a world away from

Through more than 40 intense and idiosyncratic roles — often in films a world away from typical Hollywood fare — the actress reveals a woman in complete command. In our 2019 Greats issue, out Oct. 20, T celebrates four talents who, in mastering their crafts, have changed their fields — and the culture at large. They have in common an essential and fierce desire to communicate, whether through beauty or provocation, or both. Of all the questions we ask artists, “Where did you get your inspiration?” is both the most inevitable and the most impossible. To the artist herself, it can feel like a challenge, as if her interrogator needs a plausible origin story for the work before him: Surely it couldn’t just have come from within her — could it? We revere the imagination, and yet we struggle to accept it as fundamentally elusive: Every artistic biography or critical essay is, in some part, an attempt to pierce the mystery of creation, to explain what is so often inexplicable. Answering that question can be a frustrating experience. Either your response is so straightforward as to deflate your work of its magic, or it is so opaque, even to you, the artist, that it defies articulation. ...

GI Industrial Holding adopts lower GWP refrigerant R454B

USA: Chemours has announced that Italian manufacturer GI Industrial Holding has adopted its lower GWP refrigerant Opteon XL41 (R454B) for use in its scroll chiller systems. The announcement follows GI Industrial Holding’s adoption of another Chemours R410A alternative – Opteon XL55 (R452B) – earlier this year. Both new refrigerants have an A2L flammability rating and are designed for new equipment. They are said to offer similar capacity and improved energy efficiency compared to R410A, as well as a close match in compressor discharge temperature. GI Holding was formed in 2000 and is now responsible for a wide range of equipment including chillers, air handling units, fan coils, rooftop units and close control equipment. Brands include CLINT, KTK Klimatechnik, Montair and Novair. GI Industrial Holding’s product marketing manager Enrico Pin claimed that the GI Industrial Holding product portfolio was the first in the HVAC sector to offer a complete range of high efficiency AC and chiller units with the more sustainable refrigerant R452B instead of traditional R410A used in scroll compressors. “Recently, we have also qualified R454B and released compatible equipment that brings a...

” What I really think about… supercars, America, foreigners, car launches, Top Gear, the battle of the sexes and cars “ THE VW Golf, someone once said, is a byword for everything you really need from a car. It is the answer to every motoring question that’s been asked. You’re a tearaway and you want something fun. Buy a Golf GTI (Clarkson did). You’re a commuter and you need a sensible car to drive to the station. Buy a Golf GTD. You’re a nurse and you need something cheap and reliable to get you to the hospital every morning. Buy a second-hand Golf S. Problem solved, then. But wait — maybe the question is, “What if I need an SUV for ease of loading and unloading and riding over urban speed bumps, and because it feels safer on the motorway?” The Golf is still the answer, even though in this case it’s called a T-Roc. Ignore the trendy name — it’s a jacked-up Golf. Its designers have given it a rugged look, but the disguise is fooling no one. It should have been called a Golf X-Cross. The reason it wasn’t is that VW didn’t want the Golf brand to steal sales from soft SUVs made by its subsidiaries: the Skoda Karoq, the Seat Ateca and the Audi Q2. Asked how it came...

8 best-selling phone grips on Amazon — all under $15

Like a Spotify Premium membership or a pair of comfortable underwear, a phone grip is one of those small investments that has exponentially improved my life and led me to question how I ever went about my day without it.  I’ve watched with horror as my phone has slipped out of my hand and fallen (always in slow motion, it seems) to the ground too many times to count. A strong phone case cushions the blow, but I’d still rather not drop it in the first place. After finally sticking a grip on my device, I’ve felt much more secure holding my phone on bumpy commutes, in bed — pretty much anywhere, honestly. For less than $15, you can get an additional layer of protection for that device you just spent hundreds of dollars on. The best phone grips are also comfortable to hold and have multiple functions, capable of being turned into car mounts, stands, and card holders. Since there’s only so much real estate available on our phone exteriors, we love this versatility. The LoveHandle is a soft, elastic strap that sticks to your phone, allowing you to loop multiple fingers through to get a better grip. The only potential drawback is that it stretches out after pro...

Joshua Zarb, general manager Expertise Events, which organises both the Jewellery Design Awards (JDA) and the IJWF, said his team had been “blown away by the calibre of entries”. “First and foremost, the purpose of the Jewellery Design Awards is to celebrate the amazing skills within the industry in Australia and New Zealand,” Zarb said. “It’s a way to recognise the talent that’s out there, and identify new, up and coming designers and jewellers [with the Student/Apprentice categories]. That’s what keeps our whole industry strong over all.” He added that the most well supported categories this year, in terms of number of entrants, were the Diamond Award, Coloured Gemstone Award and Bridal Award, with Coloured Gemstone being the most popular. Finalists were announced on 23 July. The most recognised jeweller is Mindika Haddagoda, who is a finalist in four categories for his pieces ‘Aphrodite’, ‘Venus’, ‘Tulips’ and ‘Rococo’. Matthew Ely is nominated in three categories for ‘Principessa’, ‘Ballare’ and ‘Chinese Fan South Sea Pearl Ring’. Meanwhile, Matt Sime’s ‘The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed’, Sophia Peacock’s ‘Rainbow Serpent Cuff Bangle’ and Ben Tracy’s ‘Diamond Fantasie’ ar...
